Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival

Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival is on the 15th day of the 8th month of a lunar calendar year when the moon is believed to the biggest and fullest. Chinese people believe that a full moon is a symbol of reunion, harmony and happiness so Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunion. Mooncakes are the main characteristic food for this occasion. Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival was derived from the ancient rite of offering sacrifices to the sun in spring and to the moon in autumn. Folklore about the origin of the festival is based on the ancient legend of Chang’e and her fateful ascent to the heavens after having swallowed an elixir pill.

Confucius’ Birthday

Confucius, also known as Kong Qiu, is a great Chinese scholar, teacher and social philosopher. Confucius is believed to be born on 28 September, 551BC. He was living in a period regarded as a time of great moral decline. Working with his disciples, Confucius edited and wrote the classics and compiled Four Books and Five Classics 四书五经 to find solutions. In his life time, Confucius traveled throughout eastern China to persuade the official classes and rulers of Chinese states with the great moral teachings of the sages of the past. Although Confucius did not succeed in reviving the classics, his teachings formed as a dominant Chinese ideology, known as Confucianism, which values the concepts of benevolence仁, ritual仪, propriety礼. His teachings have had a profoundly influence on Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Japanese thoughts and life for 2500 years.

Each year, Confucius’ birthday celebration ceremonies are held on the island of Qufu (Shangdong Province, Mainland China), the birthplace of Confucius. Outside Mainland China, Confucius’ birthday is also celebrated in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea and Japan. In Taiwan, Confucius’ birthday is set as a public holiday for teachers, known as Teachers’ Day, to memorise the first great teacher in the Chinese history.

Becoming musical with library eResources

Confucius said, “Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without”.

BETT (British Educational Training and Technology Show) award。

Nostalgia poet” Yu Guangzhong

(New Year’s Resolutions and Library Resources)

OverDrive has gone all multilingual!

One of our busiest and most popular eResources is OverDrive, an eBook and eAudiobook service that lets you download your favourite titles for free. Recently in recognition of the variety of people we have in our fair city of Christchurch we have added a number of titles in other languages. So far there are a number of eBook titles in Chinese, Korean and Tagalog.

These eBooks are for grownups as well as children and cover both fiction and nonfiction titles. What we need to do now is to spread the word about their existence. So if you speak – or are learning – any of these languages then do take the time to explore these eBooks. If you know of people that speak these languages, then please tell them about this fantastic resource. As a library, word of mouth is one of our most important tools to make sure everyone is aware of the many services we offer to those who are not native English speakers.

Read Jo’s post in Korean about the Korean eBooks.

A Midwinter Christchurch’s Dream of Shakespeare

Cover of ShakespeareWith 23 April 2014 marking the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare‘s birth, the Court Theatre is celebrating the Bard by bringing the midsummer heat into our Christchurch winter!

It is currently staging one of Shakespeare’s most imaginative and magical plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and, fittingly, it is presenting it in a unique conception.

Talented Chinese actors from Peking University’s Institute of World Theatre and the Court Theatre’s favourite Kiwi actors are performing together to interpret this masterpiece. The result promises to be a fascinating blend of their individual creative approaches.

Not being an expert on Shakespeare myself, I thought I’d translate and paraphrase part of a poem written by a brilliant Chinese poet (王佐良 1916-1995)33 years ago:

Shakespeare, with open mind and heart, absorbs one’s charisma,

Imitates the other’s wildness,

To write touching plays,

Lets emotions on stage fuel up flames,

More eternal than fire.

The fate of many characters became the subject of deep thoughts:

A young intellectual’s confusion,

An elderly father’s moaning in the wilderness,

A warrior husband’s love and paranoia,

Another warrior’s awakening at the edge of life,

Made many travellers stop by,

Searching for the path of life again.

Do you agree with this assessment? Do you think it reflects Shakespeare’s work accurately? What changes do you envisage Chinese actors will bring to the feel of this special staging of A Midsummer Night’s Dream?

Cover of A Midsummer Night's DreamP.S. Given the multicultural nature of this performance, I thought you might enjoy seeing the following translations of “William Shakespeare” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in different languages.

Chinese:

Māori:   Rurutao   –  Te Wawata o te Pō Raumati

I particularly like the fact that Shakespeare translates in Māori as “to stab at one’s emotions” – if you do speak another language, do feel free to share with us how Shakespeare’s name and A Midsummer Night’s Dream have been translated in it.
