This year the theme for Photo Hunt is Plains, Port Hills & Peninsula – Finding our way. However, the photos you submit are not limited to this theme. We invite you to share any of your photos and help grow the city’s photographic archive. All entries must be received by 31 October.

Christchurch City Libraries has produced a set of four postcards promoting the competition which are available from your local library. Each week during October we’ll be featuring one of the postcard images on our blog.

Unknown group hang-gliding on Port Hills.  We were passing by and saw them.  It was a relatively new sight in Christchurch in 1976.

“Labour Day 1953.  It’s too cold for swimming that’s why we are wearing our coats.  It was a family ritual that we started our beach visits between Labour Day and Easter regardless of the weather.”

Apparently a cold spring in 1953 as well.

Both men’s & women’s hockey has a long tradition in Canterbury; there were seven Canterbury men in the NZ Men’s Hockey Team that won gold at the Montreal Olympics in July 1976.

Waka launch Waka launch, Waitangi Day, Okain’s Bay, 6 February 1977 “As far as I know this Waitangi Day was the opening of the Thacker Museum at Okain’s Bay, and this was the first public Waitangi Day celebration to be held there. The tide was out, so there wasn’t much water in the stream. A TV crew filmed the event.”
