Christchurch to Lyttelton suburban Ec electric locomotive undergoing maintenance in the Addington Workshops [ca. 1960].

Built between 1879-1880, the Addington railway workshops replaced an earlier railway workshop (the first in New Zealand) and continued to operate until December 1990. The New Zealand EC class locomotive was designed by English Electric in 1928 to serve the electrification of the line between Lyttelton and Christchurch. They were decommissioned in 1970.

These men are shown carrying out their duties at a camp in Addington where recruits were trained before leaving for the South African (Boer) War (1899-1902). They are riding on a wagon owned by J.M. Heywood & Co. who were general cartage contractors of Christchurch and Lyttelton.

Adam McGrath at Aranui Library for Music Month

Adam McGrath, frontman of The Eastern,  will be rocking the Aranui Library this Friday, May 3 from 2 – 3pm as part of the NZ Music Month programme in our libraries. Adam and his bandmates have played and recorded in houses and all kinds of public venues since the earthquakes.
