Te Kupu o te Wiki – The Word of the Week

Kia ora. To celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori this week – and in the weeks beyond – we will be publishing kupu (words) and whakataukī (proverbs).

Kīwaha (colloquialism)

Wāwau ana
That’s cray cray

Kupu (word)

āpōpō
tomorrow

Ka haere au ki tāwāhi āpōpō.
I am going overseas tomorrow.

Whakataukī

Ko taku reo taku ohooho, ko taku reo taku mapihi mauria
My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul

This is a proverb closely associated with language revitalization, a struggle which is very important in maintaining culture.
