Libraries in your community are more than just a physical presence of buildings in Christchurch. Every week enthusiastic librarians visit preschools and attend meetings to talk about the joys and importance of reading to parents and to share stories and books. Throughout the year they pop up at festivals and other special events like Affirm in Aranui and Culture Galore in in Burnside. These are opportunities to give a face to the local libraries, to meet parents and promote all that we do.
A recent example of this outreach saw librarians Lynette and Sam talking to parents and children at a Pasifika Reading Together meeting at St Bernadette’s School in Hornby. They spoke passionately about the library and all that it has to offer families, how most services are free and the many programmes that are offered after school and during the holidays. The large number of cancelled books available to be taken home was a great hit and eagerly snapped up.
