I am currently reading Anne Somerset’s biography of “Queen Anne” (Harper press) and finding it very well written and interesting — it’s an interesting period of UK history, but there’s not a lot new that comes out on either the period and certainly not Queen Anne herself.

Hi Helen, that does sound interesting – was she the one who had 17 pregnancies but no living children?

Vanessa, sorry for the delay in replying but yes — the same Anne (Stewart – the last Stewart monarch of Britain.) Her period is fascinating, too, both because of the emerging of plotical parties in politics, the War of the Spanish Succession in Europe and the genius of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, as well as the cultural strength of the period with Swift, Defoe et al

Correction: that should have read, the last “Stuart” monarch…

I think I’m sold! Must put it on my list of books to read :)
