Movies for big kids and little kids

coverAs a kid I never shared movies with my parents – there just wasn’t much opportunity to see movies except on special occasions. Now movies are so much more accessible and the chances of parents and children bonding over a favourite film are much, much higher.

There is something about a good film that makes connections across the generations. It might be the nostalgia thing for parents – as their kids discover cartoons for the first time, parents relive their own childhood pleasure. Or it might just be a story that is so much fun and so classic that it appeals on many levels. In our house the star movie would probably be –  “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die” – yep The Princess Bride.

But there are so many more out there. With school holidays upon us why not borrow a DVD,  make the popcorn, buy in some ice-cream and cones, settle down on the sofa, dim the lights and have a family movie night.

What is your family’s favourite shared movie experience?

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Last time we got it we sat and sang the whole way through. Hey chitty ho chitty … etc. Just makes you feel so darn good. Cannot recommend it enough… toot sweet, toot sweet … truly scrumptious, you’re truly truly scrumptious …

Chitty is my all time favourite movie. And the big brown bear came LOLLOPING over the mountain…

I totally have to agree with you on The Princess Bride! I must have watched it a few times as a kid and it’s still my favourite movie. My dad used to get really strange movies for us from Central Library – The Peanut Butter Solution, The Last Star Fighter and Flight of the Navigator, just to name a few. I think I appreciate them even more watching them now though.

As a family we watched “A Knight’s Tale” when it first came out – our nephews and niece were in their early teens. For her 21st birthday my niece insisted we got it out again and we all sat down and quoted it all the way through. I think she pretty much watches it every holidays when she’s back from Uni. “I will fong you” has to be one of the best lines.

Our family is very much into cartoons – Cloudy with a chance of meatballs, Toy Story 3, and we liked Despicable Me – the wee girl in it was the spitting image of ours!

Wizard of Oz, over and over and over again.
