Soundtrack for a book

Cover image for Zoo CityThere’s plenty of soundtracks for movies, but I have’t come across a soundtrack for a book before.

UK publisher Angry Robot published Zoo City by Lauren Beukes in 2010, and now African Dope has produced a soundtrack to go with the book.

So far the brief listen I have had fits with my memory of reading the book and I’m now going to re-read the book alongside the soundtrack to see what the experience is like (and given that I rarely re-read books, this will be a quirky multisensory experiment).

Let me know if you know of other book soundtracks.

I have a feeling that the book Dirt Music by Tim Winton came with a soundtrack for the book. Anyone else remember this?

Also, An Equal Music by Vikram Seth has a CD of music from the book. This has really set me thinking – must listen to these discs – great way to recapture a book!

Yes, there is a 2 CD soundtrack for Dirt Music compiled by Tim Winton & Lucky Oceans. It didn’t actually come with the book, it was sold separately. It’s a great mix of traditional & classical pieces, from “When the boat comes in” through to Sculthorpe & Shostakovich

Hmmm I’m not sure what I think about that. Might it not distract a wee bit? My tiny brain would be trying to fill in its own mental pictures and any outside influence might cause a meltdown. That could just be the old ‘men and multi-tasking’ problem manifesting itself though 😉

Sitting, listening, looking and sometimes even reading (not to mention eating) – you must be fun to be with in the cinema!

Thanks for the other soundtrack/book combinations – I will add them to my “to-read” list 😉

@dilemma in conversation with @ChristchurchLib said “John Connolly ‘s The Black Angel / the Unquiet & The Whisperers all had special editions which included a soundtrack”
