Christchurch author wins short story prize

Last week Christchurch author Julian Novitz won the $10,000 Premier prize in the Bank of New Zealand Katherine Mansfield Awards for his story “Three couples”. Previous winners of the award include Charlotte Grimshaw (who recently picked up the Montana book award for her short story collection Opportunity), and well-known local writer, Carl Nixon.

Though not yet a household name, Novitz is far from unheard of on the New Zealand literary scene, his work having appeared in several editions of The best New Zealand fiction. Novitz also has one novel under his belt (currently his second is in the works) as well as an award-winning collection of short stories, My real life and other stories.
