Press release from The National Library:
The National Librarian/Chief Executive of the National Library of New Zealand is seeking nominations for the inaugural New Zealand Poet Laureate Award.
Poetry is an essential part of New Zealand art and culture and through the New Zealand Poet Laureate Award, the Government acknowledges the value that New Zealanders place on poetry as a part of our national identity.
The New Zealand Poet Laureate Award is based on the existing Te Mata Estate New Zealand Poet Laureate scheme, which it will supersede. While Te Mata Estate New Zealand Poet Laureates were normally chosen by their predecessors, the National Librarian/Chief Executive of the National Library will appoint the New Zealand Poet Laureate, after reviewing nominations and seeking further advice as necessary.
