Here’s Christchurch City Libraries’ top 100 items from last year for adults.
Factoids and observations:
- Road Code – number 1. Essential stuff.
- Wow - check out the number of James Patterson titles in the list (7?)
- Passion for Scandinavian crime is so not melting away
- Oldies like Wilbur Smith can still cut it with the new fellas
- Looks like people do want to know about Paul Henry, as his memoir What was I thinking is the top NZ book (after the Road Code) … but closely on its tail is The Conductor by Sarah Quigley
- About 15 out of the 100 are New Zealand books
Any observations or surprises?

I can’t believe that I have read only one of these (not counting the Road Code!)

Ha ha me too (dare I say I read number 76). But I do have a copy of #78 (Mr Fry) at home to read. So I might get the total up to 2 …

No-one here picked the road code as #1. But we did guess # 2 & 3. I’ve slightly more than a handful, but it’s now given me some other titles to place holds on.
It’s always interesting to see what was popular. I wonder how many of these titles will still be around in 10 years … 50 years. Wanna have a go at picking any future classics from the list?

I’m picking The Torchlight list: Around the world in 200 books by James Robert Flynn as one for the ages …

yes sadly I have only read one in the first 50. The Room by Amanda Donoghue, but what a book, shortlisted for the Orange Prize it’s a stunner – funny, quirky , sad, uplifting, thrilling – it has it all and the loveliest 5 year old protagonist you’ll ever meet!
And I will NEVER read the Paul Henry book – even if you offer chocolates!
