If you watch TV, you shouldn’t have missed the point that TVNZ celebrates 50 years of broadcasting this month.
However, did you also clock that it has been 30 years since The Empire Strikes Back was released? While I wasn’t quite old enough to see it in the cinema originally, I certainly remember watching it later on video. I still watch it whenever it makes for a re-run on tv. So for a trip down memory lane, why now get your Empire Strikes Back fix from the library, in the form of the DVD or various books.
I’d even hazard a guess that it is one of those films which proves that sequels aren’t always worse than the original. Yes, I thought Episode V (Empire Strikes Back) was better than Episode IV.
So do you remember watching the original at the movies? And which Star Wars flick is your favourite? Or do you avoid Star Wars like the plague?

Probably no surprise that I’m a fan of the original three (parts IV-VI) but the newer three (parts I-III) are less enthralling. I vividly remember the opening sequence with the destroyer coming in over my head…etched there now. The refreshed versions that came out 10 years ago were much improved in picture but dramatically better sound…and I was able to drag my sons along to them all (their first time). I’m waiting for the HD Blu-Ray set to be released before I purchase again.

I agree that the original three were far better watching than the ‘new’ episodes. I can’t wait til my neices & nephews are old enough to ‘forced’ to watch them with me

I can never avoid Star Wars, I know too many Wookies, and live in a house of Star Wars stuff and strange craft with legs.

Rock on Team Ewok!

As a child (yes, I did see them in the cinema) Empire Strikes Back was my least favourite of the three. (I prefer to pretend the more recent three don’t exist. It’s a strategy which works well on the second and third Matrix movies too, I find.) Nowdays Empire is my favourite – I suspect that when I was a kid all the tension and meaningful looks between Han and Leia just weren’t cool…

It’s nice to know there are some female fans of Star Wars out there! My girlfriend hasn’t ever watched the originals and it’s my mission in life to make sure she does. There’s a great episode of How I Met Your Mother where Ted makes Robin sit and watch it, only to find out that she only pretended to watch it.
I’d join Team Ewok. I watched those Ewok movies when I was a kid and wanted to have my very own Wicket. Ewoks have to be the coolest little creatures ever!

OMG, I know far more female Star Wars fans that I do male fans! Most of the guys I know a more than a little dismissive (at least in public) of SW.
You gotta make that gal of yours watch them, if only for the pop culture references that will pop up in everything else in life!

Hello, my name is Rachael, and I have never watched a Star Wars film. Mind you, popular culture pretty much has me up to date on everything that goes on in them. It gets to a point where you say, well, I’ve got by this long without them…
