The seven stars of MatarikiMatariki celebrations for this year are all but over but in the midst of all that culture and learning you may have missed The seven stars of Matariki.

Author Toni Rolleston-Cummings was moved to write the book as she felt that there weren’t very many Matariki resources available for young children.  With The seven stars of Matariki she has created an entertaining story for kids that weaves in the mythical and magical origins of the Matariki constellation with stunning illustrations by Nikki Slade-Robinson.

Each of Mītai’s brothers falls in love with one of seven beautiful sisters…but is there more to these wāhine than meets the eye?  The story follows Mītai as he fights to save his brothers with much magic and trickery along the way.

The book uses many Māori words and names and would be a great way to introduce a little te reo Māori into your child’s vocabulary but don’t worry…there’s a glossary at the back for beginners!  For those with more advanced te reo skills you may prefer the completely Māori language version Te huihui o Matariki.
